Some more material that I have managed to get uploaded.
Firstly a video slide show of the display trees from the 2016 show.

I
also recorded the critiques provided by Stephen at the December
meeting. Some technical issues which made one unusable (most of the
audio was missing) and left the others with poor focus. I do though
think that poor focus is out weighed by content. Great critiques of
trees at a range of development levels which is a useful learning aid

September meeting photos
A number of pictures from the September meeting have been added to an album on the clubs Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/RedlandsBonsaiSociety/photos/?tab=album&album_id=1290669044277515
4 members of the club gave presentations on aspects of bonsai, some beautiful smaller trees were on display and a lot of laughter was had.
Also worth highlighting that there is a great write up on potting media under the resources section of this blog site at http://redlandsbonsai.blogspot.com.au/p/potting-media.html It's an important topic especially at a time of year when a lot of trees are ready for re-potting.

Redlands Bonsai Society Facebook page
I didn't specifically point to the Facebook page for the group itself in an earlier post and realised that may help those who don't use Facebook.
https://www.facebook.com/RedlandsBonsaiSociety/
The page should be visible to all but for non-Facebook users you will be unable to interact with the page. Some aspects of the management of the page are still being experimented with so may change over time.

Intermediate Masterclass
A number of the intermediate members of the society met on Saturday afternoon for some targeted bonsai work. Each bought 3 trees for advice and to work on if desired. The master-class was led by Steve with a variety of species and styles discussed and worked on.
There was opportunity to discuss the individual trees and what was working and not working in their development. In some cases a great opportunity to get fresh perspectives on trees that had reached an impasse in development.
A very big thank you to Steve for hosting this and the excellent coaching that you provided. Also a big thank you to my fellow participants for a very enjoyable afternoon.

Ficus trees of Brisbane
I've just uploaded two excellent papers on ficus to our Resources page, one about the ficus of our Brisbane City Botanic Gardens and the other on ficus suitable for bonsai cultivation.. You can find them here.

March 2016 Meeting
Our March meeting was another full house to see our visitor Craig Jurd demonstrate a Saikei.
Craig explained that the landscape format was a 20th century innovation designed to use relatively immature material to get people engaged in the activity. As trees matured they could be reused for other plantings.
Craig had a nice long rectangular pottery container, some nice 'slag' rocks that looked very volcanic and a host of ficus trees. It was surprising and interesting to see his choice of potting media was mostly coconut coir with some diatomite.
With a little help from Geoff the trees were placed once the principal rock had been located.
With the trees having been pre-wired the final touch was a layer of the obligatory moss and the placement of a number of dwarf grass like plants for visual interest and landscape completion.

February Meeting 2016
Our first meeting for 2016 was a big one. We had 55 people on the register at the meeting and that was on the day of the AGM. The format was a quick AGM followed by a short presentation by Rhett and workshop for the balance.
Here is Rhett talking about his 'Timewasters' which was a good message about those exotic species that have been declared or were likely to be declared as environmental weeds. When reducing the load of a collection putting time into those that in the long run will be hard to sell certainly is a waste of time now.
Rhett retired from the role of President and handed the mantle back to Geoff after a 12 month break. Here he is describing a raft of changes planned for 2016 in the way we want to offer targeted bonsai experiences appropriate for different member's experience levels.
A final shot of Steve conducting the critique of members trees on display, looking to get the most learning we can for everyone at the meeting.
